While working downtown Toronto he spent time in Saudi Arabia running an oil reclamation project at an oil refinery.
Steve, his wife Pam and two children moved to Peterborough to get back to nature and to allow Steve to follow his passion for scuba diving, and his new hobby of learning how to use a Primo smoker!
Steve’s experience and technical background makes him a valuable resource in the hearth industry and he looks forward to growing with the Friendly Fires team.
Born and raised in rural Ottawa (closer to Black Rapids), Darren comes to our Kingston store with a lot of industry experience. He went to school in Lindsay, Ontario to become a Game Warden but, after graduation, the number of Game Wardens in the province were dramatically reduced. Darren decided to turn to the gas industry and took a stab at selling gas appliances, furnaces and fireplaces. He caught on quickly and a passion was born. In Ottawa, he work at a few different fireplace and HVAC stores, and gained a lot of experience – he has done it all; service, sales and installations.
In 2007, Darren settled in Ottawa’s largest distributor in our industry, servicing a number of contractors and fireplace stores. But when true love came calling, Darren moved to the Kingston area to spend his time with his fianace, Leeann.
In his spare time, Darren loves to go hunting and fishing. You will often find Darren and Leann, on their days off, out fishing on one, of the back lakes in the Kingston area. For Darren, there is nothing better then sitting on watch, listening to the wildlife and waiting for the sun to come up. We are very happy to have Darren as part of our Sales and Customer Service Team in Kingston.
Born and raised in London, Ontario, Tricia was very excited to graduate from her hometown school, Western University. She was scooped up by a company that sold military survival equipment to the Canadian Military and moved to lovely British Columbia. After a number of successful years out west, Tricia felt it would be nicer to come back home to Ontario to raise her family.
Working closely with the Canadian government, moving close to Ottawa was the natural choice. After the birth of her son Noah and daughter Camryn, she changed her career to Real Estate in the Almonte area. A great place to raise a family and they are close to many of their favourite things, camping, cottaging and the great outdoors. We are very excited that Tricia has joined our Carleton Place Team.
Amy called Belleville home her entire life until recently moving to the huge metropolis of Norwood where she lives with her boyfriend Sandy and their dog Scooter. Amy loves to travel, play golf, read and host family and friend gatherings. Her infectious smile and outgoing personality have been a welcome addition to our team. Amy is always willing to help in anyway she can, if you have any questions please go see her today.

Duane has been involved in the hearth industry for over 10 years with time spent in electroplating and manufacturing before he joined Friendly Fires in 2008. He has filled a variety of roles since then including hearth sales, scheduling, and service. Duane moved to the Cobourg location in the fall of 2012 to manage the daily operation of the store. Duane currently calls the town of Bowmanville home and has been a resident of the Durham region for over 20 years. Duane is W.E.T.T. certified and enjoys working through detailed projects that are technically challenging and will take any opportunity to prepare a scale drawing, leading his co-workers to give him the nickname “The Professor”. Duane is not a classically trained chef, although he thinks the food he cooks on his Weber Summit gas grill and Sapphire Kamodo is pretty smoking! He believes in supporting local farmers by buying local meats and produce, which also has a positive effect on the environment by reducing energy used for transportation. He has a passion for all things culinary and always has time to trade tips and recipe ideas.

Gene de St. Croix
Gene is recently transplanted here from the Niagara area, with over 20 years in the hearth industry. Gene spends a lot of his spare time out doors fishing the local waterways or off paddling major rivers in Canada. Gene enjoys winter activities like downhill and cross country skiing – and is well known to BBQ on his kamado charcoal grill all year long.
Hayley traveled all the way from Edinburgh (in Scotland) to work at Friendly Fires. Well, not really… but close. She previously worked for the British Government in the Department of Employment and on arrival in Canada worked as a children’s nanny for 4 years. After that, Hayley got into the world of retail (12 years in retail management). Hayley has worked for Friendly Fires for 15 years(!!) and heats her home with a pellet stove and a wood stove. Our resident female BBQ expert, Hayley enjoys BBQing on her propane BBQ as well as her charcoal kamado for her husband of 27 years and her incredible son. Her personal interests include writing, genealogy, cooking, reading and collecting cats…real ones! As for personal interests, she is a fan of the Ottawa Senators Fan (sorry Toronto fans), St. Helens Rugby League, music (except rap or hip hop), movies, spending time with family – but is not a big fan of reality TV (what the h is honey boo boo?).
A native of Peterborough, Jason’s background is in computers, natural sciences and transportation safety. This history would be a logical transition to the hearth industry of course – where Jason now has years experience in sales & customer service in the role of our Peterborough Store Manager. He is passionate about outdoor sports (soccer and kayaking at the top of his list), community involvement such as Movember (great pictures available – contact us), coaching kids soccer, and loves spending time with his family and pets (cat & many, many fish). Jason also loves cooking on his charcoal Primo Oval BBQ smoker, and heats his basement with a Friendly Fires Enviro wood insert.
Alex was born in Ottawa and considered it home until 2002 when he moved to Peterborough. In Ottawa, Alex earned a Honours Bachelor of Commerce, a Masters in Business Administration and spent the first 15 years of his career working for large companies. Alex has spent numerous hours volunteering for various charitable organizations and enjoys actively giving back to the community. He recently earned his WETT (wood energy technology transfer) designation and is active in attending educational sessions in the hearth industry. Besides researching all products sold at Friendly Fires, Alex tries to use as many Friendly Fires products as possible in his home to ensure quality before making them available for sale in our stores. On weekends, there is nothing that he loves more than BBQing (smoking) on his Charcoal Primo XL for his wife (Lorraine) and his two incredible children (Noah & Sequoia).
