Product Description

Cast Iron or Stainless Steel?

Napoleon provides two different options for the these cooking grills: a cast iron set and a stainless steel set.

Cast iron and stainless steel grates offer distinct benefits and drawbacks for grilling. Cast iron excels at heat retention, delivering intense sears and even cooking, but requires more maintenance to prevent rust. Stainless steel is known for its durability, rust resistance, and ease of cleaning, but may not heat as evenly as cast iron.

Cast Iron Grates
Pros:
  • Superior Heat Retention: Holds heat longer, allowing for more consistent cooking and better searing.
  • Intense Searing: Produces bolder sear marks and can cook food more quickly due to higher temperature.
  • Even Heat Distribution: Distributes heat more evenly across the grate.
Cons:
  • Requires Maintenance: Prone to rust if not properly cared for and seasoned.
  • Can be Heavier: May be more difficult to handle and clean.
  • Takes Longer to Heat Up: Requires more time to reach the desired cooking temperature.

Pros:
  • Rust and Corrosion Resistant: Doesn’t rust like cast iron, requiring less maintenance.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting: Can withstand harsh conditions and high temperatures.
  • Easy to Clean: Generally easier to clean than cast iron, with less chance of food sticking.
Cons:
  • May Not Heat Evenly: May have hot spots or uneven heat distribution compared to cast iron.
  • Less Intense Searing: May not produce as bold sear marks as cast iron.
  • Can Be Prone to Food Sticking: While generally easy to clean, food can sometimes stick, especially if the grates are too clean.

Which to Choose
  • Cast Iron: Ideal for those who prioritize intense searing, even heat distribution, and don’t mind the added maintenance.
  • Stainless Steel: Suitable for those who prefer ease of cleaning, rust resistance, and a more versatile grilling experience.
