Part Description: A thermocouple in a gas fireplace is a crucial safety device that monitors the pilot light and prevents gas leaks. It acts as a sensor, detecting the heat from the pilot light flame and using it to generate a small electrical current. This current keeps the gas valve open, allowing gas to flow to the pilot light. If the pilot light goes out, the thermocouple cools down, the electrical current stops, and the gas valve automatically shuts off, preventing gas from flowing into the firebox. Over time, a thermocouple may become worn and need replacing.
